Accounting Intern | Mauldin & Jenkins

The Tone:
This is an internship at Mauldin & Jenkins, located in Columbia, SC. Mauldin & Jenkins is a CPA firm that provides audit, management services, and tax preparation to clients. This role offers the opportunity to gain practical experience across various accounting functions, directly supporting client engagements and contributing to the firm’s service delivery.

• Mission: This person will assist with various accounting, auditing, and tax preparation tasks to support client engagements and firm operations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Evaluate: Assist in the study and testing of internal accounting controls to assess their effectiveness and reliability.
• Prepare: Draft financial statements, computations of accruals, and schedules for prepaid expenses and deferred charges, all in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Reconcile: Examine and reconcile client bank accounts and subsidiary accounts against control records, investigating any identified discrepancies.
• Support Tax: Review data input for tax preparations, identify and research technical tax issues, and assist senior staff members in the tax review process.
• Manage: Ensure timely completion of assigned tax returns and various other accounting projects.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently pursuing a college degree with a major or concentration in accounting. Entry-level.
• Experience: Academic coursework demonstrating a foundational understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS), and federal and state income tax laws.
• Skills: Strong verbal and written communication. Demonstrated accuracy in handling numeric and alphabetic information. Aptitude for learning and utilizing available resources like firm manuals and computer software.
• Logistics: Ability to provide own housing and transportation for the internship duration. Flexibility for necessary overnight travel.
